Jahzel, we’d love to learn more about you. Describe your role on the team.
As the first AE at Method, my role has evolved significantly over the past two years. It’s my job to ensure that Method is the right solution for any prospective company. When I first started, a lot of what I was doing needed to be documented so that we could grow the team. We’re now at five individuals and thriving! Most of my days are filled with guiding potential clients to a solution that will enhance how their business operates. I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by an amazing team that is always willing to assist me. I collaborate with our leadership team and technical engineers on a daily basis to make sure other companies can get the most out of our APIs.
Describe your journey into fintech. How did you choose that career path?
When you think about fintech hubs you would probably look at places like New York, California, or Texas. I live in Iowa, where there aren’t many fintech companies but there was one major BaaS provider that caught my attention. I started out as an Sales Development Representative, where I learned how fintech companies operated and got introduced to different sales methodologies as I was qualifying inbound leads. After about 18 months in that role, I was promoted to Account Executive where I really was able to dive into how ACH payments and a ledgering capabilities impacted companies where payments wasn’t their core competency.
Hearing the vision of my clients and helping them meet their top KPIs makes this career worth it. It’s amazing to feel like you are a part of another company’s team while you are working side by side to roll out a new product or enhance the current one.
What attracted you to Method?
The first thing that drew me in was that Method was minority owned. Once I saw what Method was doing and how they were doing it I had to talk to the founders. Their energy and passion behind Method was so infectious to the point that I felt like I was a part of the team before considering the company as my next home. With Method being early in its journey, I’m more than just an individual contributor. I get to be a major part of the company’s growth and overcome major challenges along the way. Method is changing the way that the industry looks at consumer liability data and payments, while creating a new standard. I couldn’t pass on the chance to continue working in the payments API space with something that was the perfect fit culturally and professionally.
How does your work impact peoples’ financial lives?
Method works with a broad range of companies from banks to employee benefit platforms to personal financial management applications. The ones I get most excited about are the companies that focus on the unbanked and underbanked. At Method, we’re allowing financial data to be more accessible to these individuals so that a plan can be built around their situations and improve their lives. This is just the use of the data. There is also a payment aspect to Method. A lot of these same individuals could benefit from refinancing or debt consolidation. Method’s fast settlement times and payment visibility help companies process these loans and avoid late fees/additional interest when individuals need assistance. Ultimately, we want people to have full visibility into their finances and be able to take action on these accounts when the time is right.
Describe Method’s culture and an experience that encapsulates it.
I’ve already mentioned that the Founders’ passion is infectious. The entire company is this way. It’s not everyday that you get to be surrounded by amazing people driven with the same goal of moving a company forward. Method’s culture is welcoming, inclusive, and curious. Everybody is willing to jump on a call to chat about work or just catch up about life. Since I work remote, you would think that it would be hard to connect with the teams that work in the office but I’m lucky enough to get to travel and see them almost monthly. Conversations pick up right where they may have left off during a video chat. We also have internal communication channels where you can connect on specific topics that interest you like fantasy football. Some of us do the New York Times daily mini crossword puzzle. My average time is probably around 2 minutes but somehow I hold the record of fastest completion at 20 seconds. The healthy competition brings us closer.
What’s been your favorite memory with the team so far?
My favorite memory so far is our all company offsite in Mexico City. We were able to take a hot air balloon over the Teotihuacan pyramids, eat lunch in a cave, and use the 10 Spanish words we know. This was my first time experiencing the team and when I witnessed our engineering team push through an update while eating chilaquiles in a cafe, I was hooked.
Method is redefining financial connectivity. Why should people come build with us?
Method has created a new standard in consumer liability connectivity. We’re making a positive impact in our client’s business and we all get to make a huge impact in Method. Everybody on the team will allow you to be heard and help iterate on any ideas thrown out there. You’ll be able to use your skills across different departments and transform the industry.
We’re always looking for innovative and collaborative individuals. If you share a passion for changing lives, come join Method!
